When I attempt to access the C: drive on my Vista machine, from my XP

When you right click the folders you desire to share and select properties
sharing tab is there a network path listed IE, \\server\foldername? Does it
say at the bottom password protected? In advance sharing properties is the
box clicked share this folder? click permissions and add the people you want
to share with like everyone.

than the public folder and convince Vista to just share the damn thing.
This is ridiculous. I'm all for security, and Vista is good in that

XP Laptop, Vista Home Premium Desktop machine.

On the Vista desktop selected Computer and C:
Under the C: drive right click 'new' folder, named it Z

On the XP Logged in with same name and password as is on the desktop Vista
machine. Laptop start - My Network Places, shows (among other things) one
folder shared from the Desktop Machine ('Public on Desktop).

On the desktop Vista, right click on the Z folder, select share, if the name
of the account that you want to use to share this account is not already in
the list select the account form the drop down list and add it. In My case
the account is my name, and the permissions are for owner are already in the
permissions list.

Click on share, give permission, says folder is shared z(\\Desktop)
\\Desktop\z

Back on the XP laptop right click on blank area of the 'My Network Places'
window and select refresh. A new folder appears 'z on desktop'


Can you get that far? If not where does your results deviate from mine?

but ran into a glitch or two. Here goes:

First, I don't understand how/why I must log in onto the XP _and_ the Vista
computers with the same name and password. My XP system and my wife's Vista
are in our own names and differing passwords. When my wife had her ME
system using her name and password, all was fine. Or maybe I misunderstood
you. (Note: both computers use the "Workgroup" workgroup)

Secondly, I did right-click on the Vista's "Z" folder, shared, but I cannot
find my XP computer (or my name) anywhere on the permission drop-down list
to add. The drop-down list only shows users on the Vista (my wife, guest,
IUSR_NMPR, and Everyone. There's no pointer to my Dell XP to add. Again, I
just don't understand how to let Vista's "Z" folder see my Dell XP so it can
share. And again, my Dell XP can "see" the "Z" folder on Vista, but it just
can't access it.

No problem, no hurry. I'll get it done some day. And you don't have to

Also, note to Michael: at no time while trying to access my Dell XP from
Vista, or access Vista files from the XP, do I encounter a request for
password info. Could that be the problem??? I never have seen a password
request on either computer except during initial bootup.

Another PS: I look through this newsgroup and am amazed at the number of
people having the same file sharing "challenges" as me. This is a red flag!

It is not necessary to have matching accounts, however as with many aspects
of Vista (and MS in general) you can do things Microsoft's way (the easy
way) or your own way (much more interesting).

Vista has a higher level of standard security than previous Microsoft
Operating systems. It expects that all users of the vista machine have valid
accounts with passwords (including external users). When this is true,
things go smoothly.

As a personnel preference I normally do things Microsoft's way at least to
start. I then sometimes change to more interesting ways, always ready to
restore my system back to before my sometimes unwise 'improvements'.

My system is set (default) to require all users of the system to have
accounts/passwords. So I am not able to demonstrate setups for other
configurations.

Both machines being in the same (Workgroup) workgroup is a plus, again you
can have networking and sharing between different workgroups but that gets
into the 'interesting' area again.

The permissions drop down list will ONLY contain accounts known to the Vista
machine, the Vista has no knowledge of your XP or accounts on the XP. It is
for this reason that you would create an account(s) on the Vista machine
that match those on the XP. After the account is established, the XP account
owner would then set the password (in Vista) for that account to match what
is used on the XP.

What happens now is that when the XP machine goes looking for shared files
out in the greater web it logs onto possible machines with its name/password
(that is on the XP) if a matching account exists on the Vista machine, then
any shared files that have valid permissions for that account will appear
with the XP universe.

There are really two concepts involved here, first the VISTA shares the
file/folder, that announces to the network that there is a shared item. Just
because there is a shared item does NOT mean that it can be accessed, that
requires the second concept of permissions. Vista allows very fine grained
permissions based on account name.

You have currently shared the folder (the Z folder should have a little pair
of people in lower left of the Icon). However you have not given any
particular user permission to see the folder.

Now having told you how MS wants it done, let me give you some hints on how
to do it the hard way if you are so inclined.

Right click on the 'Z' folder select properties, sharing tab.

Down towards the bottom is an area 'Password Protection' It should be saying
People must have a user account and password for this computer to access
shared folders.
To change this setting, use the Network and Sharing Center.

Click on the link.
The items of interest are public folder sharing, printer sharing, password
protected sharing. To do thing MS way these must be On. To bypass Vista
security you may turn these off with varying effects. It is here that you
may wish to futz around if you really want to keep XP account names off of
the Vista machine.

There are multiple levels of problems that get lumped into 'doesn't work'.
Problems range from neither machine can see the network, to neither machine
can see the other to one way works other direction doesn't. In your case as
the XP can 'see' the 'Z' folder on the Vista so most of the operation is
working. A fair number of the conversations provide solutions to the wrong
part of the problem.

Thanks again, Michael. I've printed out your reply and will study it to the
max. Problem is, I'm in severe time constraints and will have to work on
this piecemeal. I have a fairly good aptitude for working with Windows
(been there since DOS II, or so) and I can usually fix anything that comes
at me. It's just that this file sharing thing has been so frustrating
because it should be simpler.
