Default Blacked out Desktop Icons

After installing automatic updates after rebooting I found half my desktop
icons were just black squares, after testing I discovered that KB 936825 was
causing the problem has any one had the same problem or knows of an answer.

The only time I had this problem was when I used one method available on the
web to remove the arrow from shortcut icons. The blank.ico file caused
shortcut icons on the desktop to be a black squares. The blank.ico file was
obtained from:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/

The method described on that page involded modifying the REG_SZ entry "29"
under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\Shell
Icons

Restoring its default value fixed the problem.

Since then I have used Vista Shortcut Overlay Remover from Frameworkx to
make the arrow smaller, and it works fine.

I should note that I experienced this problem /before/ applying update
936825. I have not tried using the first method I described since
installing that update.
