Hello all. I am new to this forum and am hoping someone here can help me. I
just bought a M1710 XPS Dell with Vista Ultimate on it. I have an existing network that has XP and 98SE on it. Everything (but the Vista cpu of course) is networked through a Netgear router. I would like to connect the Vista to the network so I can share files and I would also like to be able to print with the networked printer. Here is my first problem. I have enabled discovery, sharing, etc under the Network and Sharing options. I can see my XP cpu but not the 98SE when i go to the My Network Places Add New Network location setup. However, I can't connect to the XP at all or choose a folder on the XP through the setup wizard. Also, I can see the vista cpu when adding a new network location on XP, but can't see my "shared folder" I created on the vista. My first big problem is when I create a folder on the Vista and right click on it and go to properties or sharing and then the sharing tab, the window stops responding and I have to use task mgr to close it. Sometimes it hangs for awhile and then looks like it is shared...but isn't. And sometimes I receive a COM Surrogate error. I have disable most of my startup progs in in msconfig on the Vista...however, none of them seem to have antying to do with networking. All of my services are enabled. Can anyone help? I have downloaded all available Vista updates and have followed alll of the instructions on MS Vista networking site found here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx Someone please help!!!! ... Hello all. I am new to this forum and am hoping someone here can help me. I just bought a M1710 XPS Dell with Vista Ultimate on it. I have an existing network that has XP and 98SE on it. Everything (but the Vista cpu of course) is networked through a Netgear router. So how is the Vista machine connected to the network? I would like to connect the Vista to the network so I can share files and I would also like to be able to print with the networked printer. Here is my first problem. I have enabled discovery, sharing, etc under the Network and Sharing options. I can see my XP cpu but not the 98SE when i go to the My Network Places Add New Network location setup. Do you mean that you can see the XP machine on Vista but not the 98SE machine? You'll never see the 98SE machine in Vista, although it might show up as some other type of device in the network map. However, I can't connect to the XP at all or choose a folder on the XP through the setup wizard. You say that you can see the XP machine in Network on Vista. What happens when you try to connect? Any error messages? Also, I can see the vista cpu when adding a new network location on XP, but can't see my "shared folder" I created on the vista. Does anything show up as shared on the Vista machine when you see it on XP? My first big problem is when I create a folder on the Vista and right click on it and go to properties or sharing and then the sharing tab, the window stops responding and I have to use task mgr to close it. Sometimes it hangs for awhile and then looks like it is shared...but isn't. And sometimes I receive a COM Surrogate error. I have disable most of my startup progs in in msconfig on the Vista...however, none of them seem to have antying to do with networking. Are you absolutely sure? All of my services are enabled. Can anyone help? I have downloaded all available Vista updates and have followed alll of the instructions on MS Vista networking site found here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx We need details about your network configuration and any error messages that you receive. -- David Dickinson eveningstar at die-spammer-die dash mvps dot org Please reply only to the newsgroup, not by email. |

Mark Mark, You might want to check name resolution settings on each computer, to start. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...on-on-lan.html Then personal firewalls and the NetBT setting could be involved too. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/0...ing-using.html And I'm not familiar with a COM surrogate error, specifically, but I suspect I'd check my drivers next, if I were dealing with such a symptom. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-physical-network-problems.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...-problems.html Then I'd do an intensive look at the network, repeating the above diagnostics but in different ways. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/1...isibility.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
