Default Vista networking

I have three Vista machines and 3 XP Pro machines in a peer-to-peer setting.
The network function on a particular Vista machine will wrk fine and the then
quit working while nothing is gin on. Sometimes a reoot will work, smetimes
not.
While trying to reestablish the network, the "dependency group failed to
start" message appears. Most of the network service items in the services
applet seem to have started. I can frequently connect to internet sites while
this is going on. For example, I am typing this at a machine that refuses to
connect to a network.
I have looked at the configuration of the nics, error logs, Technet, the KB.
I don't have any hair left to pull out so what is next?

No, not only were there no errors, the built in diagnosis tool says there
are no problems with the network. To make it even more fun, it frequently
(not all of the time) gives me a message that it cannot find an in internet
connection when sending a response to an online form while at the same time
running a download from Microsoft and/or Peachtree.

Bob,
This is a copy of a previous post I made. I have yet to resolve the problem
after reading every log file I could find on the machine. I have gone back
through Local Security, network setup, deleted NICs and reinstalled them. I
am at a loss.

By the way, there used to be a Bob Lin at PW & Co many moons ago, any
relation?

Additional piece of information on this mystery. While the machine has been
happy to run on the internet all along, it has now decided to see the other
machines on the network. This works only as long as I leave network discovery
turned off. It also seems unwilling to connect to networked printers.
