Regards Daryl Daryl, If both computers can access the Internet, then you don't need more hardware. Can you get the Vista laptop to access anything shared by the desktop? Does the desktop share anything else? What is the exact error message or problem observed when you "can't get it to do file sharing."? http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...useful-in.html Is the XP desktop running XP Home or Pro? If Pro, is it running Simple or Advanced File Sharing? If Advanced, is a non-Guest account activated for network access? http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0....html#Activate If you're using Guest for access, is the external hard disk shared with a non-"$" share name? http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...-xp.html#Guest -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. I wrang microsoft and paid $80 for a quick an easy solution:
Simply map the IP address of the computer you want to connect to through vista and ensure its a shared resource and it works a treat. "Chuck [MVP - Windows Networking]" wrote in message ...
