Default Mobile Broadband Sharing

Hello all...I have two laptops. A Dell XPS running Vista Business @ 2GB for
RAM. The other is a Dell Inspiron running XP Pro @ 1GB RAM. The XPS running
Vista has an internal Verizon Mobile Broadband card in which I have mobile
broadband service.-------I am trying set up my laptops either wirelessly
(which would be awesom) or crossover cable so that the XP Pro comp will be
able to connect through the Vista comp in order to gain internet access. I
have a wireless Linksys router if necesary. I used to have local wireless. I
need to know how to configure IP settings on either the LAN connection of the
Wireless connection. PLEASE HELP...I HAVE A $2000 COMPUTER COLLECTING DUST
UNDER THE COUCH.

Are you able to connect them succesfully wirelessly in an Ad Hoc network? To
set up the IP settings is easy. You should use a private network, I recommend
the 10.0.0.0 just incase you are using the 192.168.X.X range.
To configure the adapters go to START, Control Panel, Network and Sharing
Center (or View Network Status and Tasks), on the left column click Manage
Network Connections, right click on the adapter you want to change and select
Properties, click ok on the UAC pop up, then select Internet Protocol Version
4 (TCP/IPv4) and select properties, Select "Use the following Ip Address:"

Computer 1: IP-10.0.0.1 Subnet -255.255.255.0
Computer 2:IP-10.0.0.2 Subnet-255.255.255.0

then just click ok

Just set the values on the correct adapter and if you have either a
crossover, or wireless ad hoc network they will connect. You will of course
have to set up your sharing. Let me know if you have any problems.

The default gateway is use to connect to an outside network, if you were
trying to connect to the internet through one of the computers you would use
it. And the DNS is not used here either. Those are the only two properties
you will need.

Default Mobile Broadband Sharing

That is exactly what I'm trying to do...connect to the internet from XP Pro
laptop thru Vista laptop.

I got them sharing files and printers using you configuration, however I
still cannot connect to the internet on the XP Pro laptop.

I have the "Mobile Broadband Connection" set to allow internet connection
sharing and have both firewall's disabled and antivirus programs disables.

Do I need to add a default gateway and DNS server to the XP Pro box
configuration?

Default Mobile Broadband Sharing

If you want to share your connection you need to set up "Internet Connection
Sharing". You will set this up on the computer that is connected to the
internet. You can set the other computer back to DHCP, and it should be
assigned all the information it needs. If it doesn't leave the IP address,
and set the default gateway on that machine to the one that is connected to
the internet. You should set the DNS server to your local ISPs DNS server. To
figure out what this is, go onto the computer that is connected to the
internet.
1.Open A Command Prompt (Start, Program, Accessors, Command Prompt)
2. Type in IPCONFIG /ALL
3. You will see a number after DNS Server. This is your ISPs DNS (or maybe
your router, either way it will work.)
4. Set this number on your other computer. If it has errors, try setting it
the same as the default gateway.

You say you already have Internet Connection Sharing Enabled, so it should
work.

You say you already have Internet Connection Sharing Enabled, so it should
work.

The default gateway is use to connect to an outside network, if you were
trying to connect to the internet through one of the computers you would use
it. And the DNS is not used here either. Those are the only two properties
you will need.
