My home network: wireless router: ActionTec MI424WR connections: Verizon FIOS Internet Sony VAIO desktop via ethernet - 192.168.1.5 - XP Pro Gateway Laptop via wireless - 192.168.1.3 - Vista Internet connection sharing works on both file and device sharing works both ways between the 2 computers VPN from the laptop to the desktop host gets err 800 How do I troubleshoot this? This is over the public internet through the router to the desktop? Remember it is *NOT* a valid test to call the desktop from the laptop over the LAN using the public IP of the router. You can call using the private static LAN IP in order to test basic connectivity. http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.or...icVPNTest.html When calling from a remote site make sure TCP Port 1723 is forwarded on the router to the private static LAN IP of the desktop. Also the router needs to be able to pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic. That is sometimes called "PPTP Pass Through" or "VPN Pass Through" or is automatically passed when TCP Port 1723 is opened. Consult the routers users manual or manufacturers web site for help. You can also test all of this using the test detailed in the "PPTP Ping" and "VPN Traffic" sections on this page.. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/com...uy/cg0105.mspx See the last part of this page for help getting the pptpsrv.exe and pptpclnt.exe files onto your Vista machines. http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.or...P/PPTPVPN.html Also see these pages... http://blogs.technet.com/rrasblog/ar...-problems.aspx http://www.howtonetworking.com/vpnissues/error800.htm -- Al Jarvi (MS-MVP Windows Networking) Please post *ALL* questions and replies to the news group for the mutual benefit of all of us...
