Default x64 can't connect to router/net

I've been trying over the weekend to install Ultimate x64. The install
goes fine but when I reach the desktop and attempt to update I can't.

Opening the network and sharing centre shows there is a network and
internet access, but if I open IE and attempt to visit a site I get no
reply from the server. It tries to communicate according to the IE
status bar, but is being blocked somehow. I can't even get to the
router's setup pages using it's ip address. Also, occassionally the
network dissappears in the network and sharing centre when network
activity is attempted. If I change network settings (disable IPv6
protocol for example) then the network comes back to life again after a
few seconds.

I tried modifying the netsh autotuninglevel to 'high' and to 'disabled'
but it didn't help in any way. Also tried disabling QoS Packet Sheduler,
IPv6 Protocol, Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper and Link-Layer
Topology Discovery Responder and even turned off the firewall. Again,
none of this helped.

The machine has an IP address assigned manually (no dhcp involved).

NIC is an onboard Marvel Yukon and I tried installing the latest Marvel
drivers (26 Jun 07?).

Router/ADSL Modem is a Netgear DG834v2 which, although no longer
supported by Netgear, works perfectly with the same machine running
Ultimate x86.

I could use some advice on what to look at / try next. Can anyone
help?

Thanks.

Check if you are using 64-bit or 32-bit version of the Internet browser. This post may help,
