Default Can't get above 10 fps in ANY game

I installed Vista Beta 2 (5384?) and I now have format-installed Pre-RC1
(5536). Everything in this build seems to be very polished and smooth. I
have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and it's running the Vista visual effects/Aero
effect very nicely, however I still cannot game at all.

I installed a few games, including Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United
Offensive. Both of these games are older and my hardware runs them
flawlessly on XP, however in Vista, I only get above 10 FPS if I look to the
edge of a map or into the sky. It almost "feels" like it's using Software
rendering instead of Hardware.

To be sure it wasn't a driver issue, I went to ATI's website and got the
drivers listed on their site. Granted the drivers say they are ONLY released
for RC1 (5600 I believe?), it seems most people are saying they should work
fine with 5536. Everything installed fine, and I can open up the ATI control
panel and everything looks right, except that OpenGL is listed as "Not
Available." Direct 3D version is 7.14.10.0431.

Full screen video, and Media Center video/effects work fine, however games
do not. I even tried running a game in windowed mode, same deal. What
gives?? Am I doing something wrong?

Help!!

Update: It seems like I'm getting a good FPS in CS: Source, and it is
definately playable, however there is consistantly a quick freeze every
second.

I tried installing CoD2 (which seemingly is one of the games others have
been basing Vista gaming performance on) and the installer crashed with an
error before getting anywhere.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

can't say anything for Ati, I use Nvidia.

Try to look into the controlpanels options if you can select something in
the way "run with best graphics" "runs with best speed" etc.. play around
with all options you find.in Nvidia-controlpanel one can do that.
Also have a look in the ReadMe for your drivers, if Ati has written
something about incompatibilites for Vista.

But Ati's Driver are usually a bit buggy when they first release new ones.
Their Linux Drivers f.example are a hell, while Nvidia is a one-click and
go.

That is under Windows the same.Remember that Vista is not only a different
OS, it handles all graphic-related stuff now in the way that Linux does, by
removing the Desktop out of the kernel. Desktop runs in its own process,
while in earlier versions of Windows the Desktop and the OS was one and the
same.

I had a Radeon 9250 and have changed to Nvidia 6200 because of the f**ckin
drivers . I use Win and Linux. and have a lot of 3D work to do, so this has
to work.

Anyway - contact Ati if in doubt and hope they will release newer drivers
with working openGL. Or buy Nvidia ;-) I can play all my games very well on
Pre-Rc1.And on Linux, too.

It probably is using software rendering, ATI's drivers do not currently
support OpenGL properly.

I have noticed the same problems and was told it was due to drivers. I am
running nvidia 7900 and only get 20 fps in hl2. You would think a simple
thing like a driver would work this close to release time...

I don't have any newer games to test the frame rate with, so I had to use a
copy of Quake 3.

Setup includes 6600GT, AMD x2 64 3800+, 2GB RAM. Game set to run at
1024x768, everything turned up.

With Vista RC1, I got 55fps.

I then downloaded and installed the RC1 drivers from NVidia's website.
Tested the frame rate again, and this time received 285fps. This number is
comparable to what I get on WinXP.

With the x64 version of RC1, I found the same behaviour.

The drivers are a huge matter to overall Desktop/3D Performance and
Aero-Behaviour, of Course too.

Before I had installed the new RC1 nvidia drivers on my Geforce 6200 Vistas
Experience index showed up as 2,0 ( have only 512 RAM and Duron 1,8 GhZ)
after installing nvidia drivers and rerun the experience indexer it said 2,7
!

I can play all my games very well now, some even run smoother than on XP
(AOE3 for example)

Aero Desktop / Animating windows and so is very very much quicker in
reacting to mouseclicks and smooth as can be.

I love this Vista RC1 ! and bet I will buy a Home-Premium copy, RTM version
will see even more performance and better drivers. - so... Gratulations
Microsoft !

Unfortunately, I've updated to RC1 and it's even worse! For instance in
CoD:UO even the menu screen is laggy!!! I have to turn down to lowest video
setting at 640x480 for it to feel responsive at all... there's just no way
this isn't running on SW Acceleration. I agree with some other comments
earlier... this simply isn't acceptable for an RC1 release, whether it's
ATI's fault for not getting drivers out the door, or MS's fault. Either way,
it's unacceptable this late in the game. I'm seriously reconsidering buying
Vista when it comes out now.

Note: everything else is superb! But I am a gamer, and this is what matters
to me. I don't think many gamers are beta testing, because is crazy...
