I have a Linksuy 802.11b...just got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium.
I needed to update my admin settings on the router and Linksys (besides
wanting me to spend $ for service just to tell me how to get to the
setup/modify page) informed me that Vista does not recognize
b-routers....that I need a g-type. Are they just trying to sell me a new
router or is this true?

This is not true. It may not be compatible with your particular 802.1b
router but Vista is compatible with most "b" routers. What is the model of
your router and what is the version of the firmware in it?

Vista doesn't need to recognise routers, period. Vista just has to recognise
the Ethernet (WiFi) adapter. The Ethernet (WiFi) adapter recognises the router.

But there are features in Vista that will work better with a newer router, and
eventually you will learn that if a router only supports 802.11b, you should
replace it now, rather than later. An example of that is Windows Scaling, which
is necessary to make Receive Window Auto Tuning work.

Any piece of WiFi gear that supports 802.11g also should support 802.11b, so if
you have an 802.11g WiFi adapter in the computer, it SHOULD communicate with an
802.11b router. But it's a better for you in the long run to upgrade.

Bottom line - the Linksys folks did have your best interests in mind, although
they were stretching the truth a bit.

suggested, but for now rather just use what I have (if I can).

That is a pretty old router. I agree with Chuck, in the long run you would
be better off with a newer router. Can you connect at all? Does your
computer show your wireless network as an available network?

I see that Circuit City has some wireless routers for about $50...didn't
expect them to be that low - so yes, I should just upgrade and start new.

A couple years ago I set up the b-router...hardwired to the desktop and
wireless to a laptop. Shared network and internet...all was fine and then
lost internet on the laptop, then the network. Figured I had a bad pc-card.
Now, with the new laptop I had the router plugged in but not connected to the
desktop. The laptop "found" the network, but didn't go anywhere beyond that
(since the desktop wasn't sharing since not plugged into the router).
anyway, even once plugged in nothing worked on the laptop...figured needed to
go to the router web-based setup page and add the IP address or serial
number, etc. However, I could not access the setup page. When I called
Linksys, they said I need to pay $30 for service since the warranty was
up....just to tell me where to find the setup page.

Oh well, like I said it probably is better to upgrade anyway and skip the
frustration of trying to get something to work. Thanks for your help.

Maybe I am missing something. You have a wireless router. Are you trying to
connect wirelessly? If yes, all that matters is what type of wireless card
you have and if it has the correct Vista drivers.

Problems between wireless cards and routers are legendary. Try adjusting
some of the wireless card's properties after you get the latest Vista
drivers. Then see if you can updrade the router's firmware.
