Default Lite-On DVD SATA drive

I'm having a lot of problems with this new DVD drive. Many times the
media is not recognized or Vista thinks its a blank disk when its not
or that that its what was in there before. I tried to find the
firmware info in the device manager buts its not there as "firmware".

Is anyone else having media detection problems??

thanks

rwphilips,

A good way to find firmware, if you're looking for firmware, is to search
the website of the manufacturer of your DVD drive. The manufacturer should
provide information about this, usually in their Support or Download area.
You have to search for it. Another approach for troubleshooting the issue
you have is to use google to search the Internet for solutions. The problem
has likely been addressed many times. There could be multiple sources
causing this problem, with firmware being only one of them. Try a different
media, like brand or type , for example.

Yes, I have had two Lite-On SH-16A7S drives, and I have returned them both
to the retailer. With both of them I found a significant number of my DVD
movies were not recognised at all when inserted into the drive. [The discs
are perfectly fine, and are recognised immediately by my 10-year-old Hitachi
drive that has never had a lens cleaner through it since it was new]. The
Lite-On website has no downloadable firmware for this model (or didn't at
the time I returned the first one) and their technical support suggested it
was a drive fault and that I should return it. Either it is a fault with a
batch that the retailer received, or it is a problem with the design of the
whole model.

I have now swapped for a Samsung drive, and hope it works better. I expect
it to arrive on Saturday or Monday depending on the courier.

Unfortunately, due to a cock-up in the shipping department I am now on my
third Lite-On drive and I haven't had the chance to try a Samsung drive yet.
For information, the third drive was considerably better than the other two.
But still out of a random sample of seven movies from my collection, one I
couldn't get to be recognised at all, and one was intermittently not
recognised.

I'm waiting for the courier to pick it back up, but it means I won't have
the Samsung until next weekend probably.

I have tested the Samsung drive (model SH-S203) and it appears to work fine.
It successfully reads all the movies I have tried so far including the one
which the LiteOn drives all found to be very problematic.
