Make sure you are running (XP) games in Compatibility mode: Windows XP.
Doing that improved game startup times and framerates considerably for me (though YMMV). Vista tries to use DirectX 10, which is incomapitble with DX9, so DX10 and DX9 are installed side-by-side. Using Compatibility Mode tells Vista to not even try to use DX10. "Ryan" wrote in message ... I have a Celeron D (3.06GHz) + 2.0GB DDR2-SDRAM + nVidia GeForce 7600GS PCI and Windows Vista build 5728 and game performance is pretty crappy. Can anyone tell me if they have better performance with the Microsoft WDDM drivers or should i be getting the nVidia beta drivers. Also, does anyone know when nVidia will be releasing new drivers for Vista? |

I posted an entry down in the thread Battlefield 2 poo performance
On an X1900XTX, I'm seeing slower performance under Vista than I am under XP. Some of the performance drops are Major (like 30% in HL2 and FEAR) other performances are only a few hundred points in benchmarks like 3dMark05 and 06. I'm of course, still tweaking with my system, so maybe I'll find something that ups\helps the performance at some point, but right now, Vista in general and the beta drivers from both Nvidia and ATI are probably not very polished and probably won't get the same level of attention as XP until around new years, ot a few months before Vista is actually going to be released. I've included my numbers from the other posts for your viewing pleasure. Here's a list of benchmarks I've ran so far with the X1900XTX, using the beta Vista drivers from ATI and Vista RC1 (build 5600). 3dMark06 XP - scored: 5061 - http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=256235 Vista - scored: 4873 - http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=509085 Vista XP2 mode - scored 4852 - http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=509124 Half-life 2: Lost Coast XP - scored: 101.71 Vista - scored: 70.22 Aquamark03 XP - scored 81,999 Vista - scored 65,39 FEAR with patch 1.07. XP - scored: 141 Vista - scored: 94, in XP mode scored the same Under Battlefield 2, the performance seemed fine at first, but as I starting playing, I noticed alot of stuttering and drops from a normal steady 99-100 fps to 50 fps. It seems the nvidia driver for vista rc1 doesn't have good support for DX10,
I tried to play Company of Heros, but the performance of the video is poor. Is this my problem of my computer? CPU: P4 2.6C (HT) MEM: 512M * 2 HD: 80G IDE VGA: 7600GS AGP. "Ryan" wrote in message ... I have an Athlon 64x2 3800+ with an NVidia GeForce 6600, and 5728 seems to
be faster than 5600. Video benchmarks give frame rates that are within a couple percent of what I get on WinXP. "Ryan" wrote in message ... Well, guess I'll just have to wait for the next release Canidate. Has I'm
just a lowly MSDN subscriber. "Roberto Baggio" wrote in message news:O9KSg.66829$R63.56021@pd7urf1no... I have an Athlon 64x2 3800+ with an NVidia GeForce 6600, and 5728 seems to be faster than 5600. Well Ryan, I'm running a Pentium 4, 3.0ghz and 4.0 SDRAM, and a GeForce
7600GS 8X AGP and it is working just fine with the build 5782 and the WDDM driver. It was a little sloppy with the 5600 version, but now is working smoothly, I have maximum resolution that my monitor can handle (1280x1024). I usually play Elders Scroll Oblivibion which is a game who takes a greal deal of the machine power and it is running fine. |
