Default wireless network newbie

I want to set up wireless in my home. I have a broadband basic connection,
Vista Home Premium and an HP laptop with a Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN
pre-installed. I know almost nothing about computers. I need a range radius
of about 40', (there are several walls in this radius. I've read a lot about
Vista issues with wireless, so I'm not sure which router to get. Also
worried about security. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I also don't
want to go "on the cheap" and have nothing but frustration. I use the
internet for email, music and video. Is there a router out there that can
give me all of this, with a simple set up, and what security software should
I use? Thanks!

I'm extremely pleased with the D-Link DIR-655 wireless router.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sho...ers/dlink.mspx

I believe it's available at Circuit City. It's really simple to
setup using WiFi Simple Config/Wifi Protected Setup. Use WPA2 for
security. The router has a built in hardware SPI firewall, so with
the router, Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, I think you
should be in good shape.

Barb,
I am also newbie to wireless world and I am looking at purchasing the D-Link
DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router to run with my Windows Vista Ultimate and

so, first thing is that you don't want both the computer and the 360
to be wireless. I'll assume that the host computer will be wired.

second is that depending on many things, 802.11g (if you are
thinking about the Xbox wireless adapter) may not be good enough
depending on conditions. I've been using engineering samples of (the
now released) http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=570 and have
one plugged into the ethernet port of my 360, so that enables draft
N on the 2.4GHz side. It works great.

If you have a decent wireless router already, you could get 2 of the
DAP1555's and treat yourself to 5 GHz "draft n" streaming which will
do everything you want.
