Default Problem with looking up UNC names

I am running windows Vista x64 Ultimate, the problem I have is that when I
join my home network, (with the same workgroup name as my other pc's) I
cannot view ANY of the other pc's in my network, only my localhost comes up
NATHAN-PC and my router comes up. I know the names of the other PC's in my
network. So if i just try typing in the path so for example
\\nathan-laptop\shared, it should work, but it doesn't work. I get a message
saying that the network path was not found.

Now, if i just type the IP address of that pc example \\192.168.1.116\shared
it will work fine.

I had installed this same Vista previously on the same pc and hardware and
this problem never occured. Any suggestions to get UNC hostnames to work? I
have all the latest Windows Updates installed. Network Discovery is turned
on, Windows firewall was turned off to troubleshoot.

So once again the two symptoms are, typeing in a hostname for a pc does not
work, however entering the IP address works. And I cannot view the other PC's
in my network.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Sound like name resolution issue. Make sure you enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Very good suggestion, im suprized I didnt think of that myself. However,
still no go. I even tried disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP, restarting the PC,
then enableing NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and restarting just for kicks.

I appreciate the help still, any other suggestions maybe?

Whoa, whoa hold on here. I just looked at the "details" for my network
connection under status, and at the bottom of the list, it says NetBIOS
enabled over TCP/IP No

When i go into the properties in IPv4 to change this, it says its on
enabled... Am I looking in the wrong place? Or could there be another cause
that my NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled?

Looks like you may have been right on the money. *thumbs up*

We have seen this case before, but don't remember the solution. Try to setup TCP/IP manually. Please post back with the result.

It makes no differnce if I use DHCP or set it up manually. Everything is the
same.

Default Problem with looking up UNC names

I have tried to disable IPv6, i was looking around google for some answers
and I found that if I type nbtstat -n in the command prompt, the message
returned is:

Failed to access NetBT driver -- NetBT may not be loaded

I might just end up formatting my system and starting from scratch again,
but it really would be awesome to solve this little mystery.
