I have an hp desktop and hp laptop, both are new. I have connected a
wireless linksys g router to the desktop and set up wireless connection on my laptop. I have no problems getting on the internet on either computer. I am trying to access the files that are on my desktop thru my laptop. I have dealt with HP and Linksys and followed all of the Vista and Microsoft instructions for file sharing. I can set up the folder for share but when I go to my laptop and click on the desktop under networks it says that it cannot access. Seems impossible since I use it connect to the internet. Can someone please help. |

Open the properties of the shared folder and check the permission. Please post back with the result.

Can someone please help. Welcome to the club - you'll see lots of this problem in this group, and the MS-MVP's will all try to help, and in the end you'll probably not get it to work. I have the exact same problem: XPPro wired to a router, Vista Home Premium wireless through the same router. Cannot share files between XP and Vista unless both computers are either wireless or wired. If they are both connected to the router the same way, sharing is perfect. If one is wired and the other not, I can see the folders I want to share on the other computer but cannot transfer or alter anything. It's waiting for Vista's SP1 methinks. I've read and read all kinds of stuff, and learned a lot I don't need to know about networking, but I can't get them to talk to eachother. With both computers running XPPro it was seamless. It seems like a Vista problem. So we wait for the 'boffins' to do what they should have done before releasing Vista: get it finished enough to do basic networking with the previous operating system from the same company. b |

The permissions show as read, write, read and execute, modify and list folder

In Network sharing, what permissions do you have set to ON and OFF?
Stuff like: Password protect, file sharing, public, Network discovery, etc "Tina" wrote: Robert, I'm new to this whole sharing things. OK, after you have exhausted all forms of suggestions and still cannot get
this to work properly try this. First set all hosts to a static IP from your router Then with the C drive shared, map the drive both ways from each computer. This is the only way I was able to get file sharing to work between vista and XP. Hopefully sp1 will have addressed this issue and have been resolved.
