Default Ripping DVD, Idiot Guide Please

Hi, I've just bought a new laptop with Windows Vista premium. My last PC,
which used XP, had a pre installed Sonic Record Now program in for ripping
and burning DVD's, the laptop I've bought doesn't have this and I'm unable to
figure out how to rip a DVD using the pre installed DVD maker or media centre.
Can anyone out there provide me with an idiotsguide of how to do this?
I've tried using the help and support pages already but can't seem to find a
difinative answer.
Thanks

I also use windows vista home premium.
New desktop Compaq PC as of May.
I use magic dvd ripper, they have a free trail version that will allow 5
rips to your hard drive.
Then after trying all of microsoft software to burn dvd's for use on my tv I
gave up.
After not being to burn anything that would work on my tv dvd player using
any of there products.
I wasted 8 dvd-r before trying different software.
I have Nero ultra edition enhanched version, I finally used NERO RECODE to
burn dvd that would work on my TV dvd player.
