I haven't yet found the answers to these problems, so . . . we have
two laptops and two desktops on a wireless home network, one each
Vista and one each XP. I'm trying to establish full sharing amongst
the user community (me and my children) and can't even get the Vista
devices to recognize each other.

The specific problems:

1) The Vista laptop can "see" C:\ on the Vista desktop, but cannot
access it ("access denied"). This despite setting desktop C:\ sharing
to "Share". Where should I go for clues to fix this?
2) The Vista laptop can "see" a Lexmark printer connected to the
Vista desktop, but cannot print to it (a password dialog box comes up,
despite not having password protection enabled on the desktop). Where
should I go for clues to fix this?

I'm semi-dreading fixing these problems, since my next step will be to
get the two XP devices to recognize everything too.

I have to consider myself a newbie on this. I'm in the Properties tab
for C:\ on the Vista desktop, and when I enter "Chris" (the user of
the Vista laptop) I am told that "Chris" cannot be found. (If the

The printer in question does not have a Vista driver - according to
Lexmark, the manufacturer. It prints just fine from the Vista
desktop, certainly without a Vista driver. Is there some other
possible mechanism to remove the password requirement? (If the links
you provided answered this question, I couldn't find that answer
either.)

Thanks . . . . and if Vista's capabilities don't at this point extend
to networking Vista computers together, I can handle not working on
this further.

Got another problem too . . . while putzing around more, trying to
print from the laptop, we got a "Active Directory Domain Services
Unavailable" message. This is a little disturbing since there doesn't
seem to be a topic on this message on Usenet . . . now what's up?

I am sorry to be a pest, but these problems still exists . . . can
anyone point me in the right direction for the two problems noted
earlier? Has anyone had any success fixing issues like this? If I
have to do something with user setup, is there a web resource, written
for the common user in plain language, that can provide me some hints?

Password protected sharing has been off since I set up the two
computers in April. Since then, since there really wasn't much else
to do, I've turned it on and off again with no improvement.

I'm sorry, I cannot find this "Advanced" and "Find Now". Here's what
I do get . . . when I right-click on the drive to be shared (c:\) and
select "Share . . . " I get a five-tab window. On none of these five
tabs (General, Network, Sharing, Security, Customize) appear
"Advanced" or "Find Now". I am logged on as the primary user, which
should be set up for full access.

Even if I do find these buttons or links, I'm still fundamentally
confused. Do I need to set up the laptop user with his own user ID on
the desktop? If so, how do I link the desktop user with the laptop
itself? Again if so, what is the process to set up sharing access?

Are the XP computers running XP Home, or XP Pro? If Pro, is Simple File Sharing
Enabled or Disabled?
