Default microphone not recording

Of course, check that your microphone is connected to the right jack, usually
it's the red one with the microphone icon.

Check if the microphone volume is set high enough. Open "Recording devices"
in the control panel, or right click on the speaker icon in the notification
area and click on Recording devices.
Select Microphone and click Properties. On the Levels page, set the slider
to 100. If that still isn't loud enough, sometimes there is a Mic boost
option on the Custom page.

Also, make sure the microphone is set as the default device.
