Hi,

I've tried to share files between one computer with Vista (Home Basic) and
another with Windows 98 SE in a home network without success. I can see the
two computers popping up in "Network Neighborhood" but cannot open them for
file sharing.
However, when I try with a third computer with XP in the same home network
it works fine (!), both between XP/Vista and between XP/Win98. Still between
Vista and Win98 does not work.
Anyone that can explain why or know a workaround ?

Make sure all computers are using the same username and password. This link may help too.

Everytime I tried a Vista and XP home net, Vista sees everything in XP
fine, but the opposite has never been possible!!! XP cannot access
everythuing in my Vista machine, although I tell it to (UAC off,
course)! Open/share every single folder, but it never happens. Does
anyone know how to make Vista COMPLETELY (all folders and files) visible
to XP??

PS: haven't read the article above yet. Will give it a try!

It seems that you hit my problem but it is still not solved.
I have now tried to upgrade the Win98 with NTLM 2 authentication according
to the instructions in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239869/
The installation of the Directory Services Client succeeded, but I got stuck
when trying to activate NTLM 2 authentication. The step 4 in the instructions
( ref to: kb/239869 ) says:
"4. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry
value:
Value Name: LMCompatibility
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 3
Valid Range: 0,3
Description: This parameter specifies the mode of authentication and session
security to be used for network logons. It does not affect interactive
logons. "

The thing is, I do not have ADD VALUE option in my registry editor and does
not understand how to enter the registry values correctly. As far as I
understand, the only option I have is to create a NEW STRING VALUE for each
of the parameters and MODIFY the value of the same. For example NEW STRING
VALUE NAME = Valid Range and VALUE DATA= 0,3.
Is that the way to enter the registry values correctly ?

Delete, Rename, Copy Key Name, Find, and Find Next.

Anyway, with the help from your response, I guess I misunderstood the
instruction.
So I have now deleted what I did earlier in the registry and thereafter
added only the following DWORD Value under the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\LSA] registry key :

Name = LMCompatibility
Data = 3 (entered as decimal value)

After doing this the status is the following:
From Vista I can only access the files that are unprotected (=no password
set). I get "Login Failed" if the shared directory requires a password. I use
identical username and password on Win98 and Vista.
From Win98 I can access the shared directory but it is behaves very slow.

So it is not completely solved but progressing ...

Password protected folders is a security measure that went away after Windows
9x, so it's no surprise that a computer running Vista would have a problem
there.

And slow performance is a known issue.

If you're able to share files at all between Windows 98 and Vista, you're ahead
of some folks here. My guess is you've done about all that you can do.
