Default Can't connect HP Deskjet printer to USB Port

I have a HP Deskjet 690C printer which I was using connected to a USB port on
my last computer (XPPro operating system) with a USB to Parallel Port adapter
cable.

My new Computer has Vista home premium operating system and intel core 2 duo
processor E6300. I already have a HP PhotoSmart D7160 printer installed on
one USB port but I would like to install the Deskjet 690C on one of the other
USB ports (of which there are 6 on the rear and 2 on the front). Windows
Vista provides signed drivers for the Deskjet 690C printer which appear to
have installed properly. During the installation proceedure I was presented
with a list of Printer Ports including DOT4-001 (HP Device), USB 001 Virtual
printer port HP PhotoSmart D7160, USB 002 & XPS Port (local Port) and asked
to choose one. I selected USB002 being free, but when I tried to print a test
page I got a message “A test page has been sent to your printer”
If so it did not arrive. There was not a quiver of response from the printer.
What has gone wrong? Will a USB connection which worked on an XPPro
platform not work on Vista? I would be grateful for help.

Many Thanks
