Default Network discovery

I'm new to Vista and cannot work around this problem:
We have a normal network containing 6 Windows XP pc's. The switch also
allows wireless connections and we have one Windows Vista Business laptop
attempting to connect to the other network.

The wireless connection functions and I can copy between the network and the
laptop. However I have to use the pcs' IP's instead of their names when I
search for them, explore them or map their drives. I cannot find them, affect
them, using their names.
Using a LAN cable to connect the laptop to the network does not seem to make
a difference.

I need to correct this problem in order to get Pastel to use the mapped
drives.
Please advise.

Sounds like name resolution issue. Have you enabled the NetBIOS over TCP/IP? Or this link may help,

Default Network discovery

Have you tried the following:
In Vista Networking and Sharing:
1 Network Discovery ON
2 File Sharing ON
3 Public Folder Sharing ON
4 Password Protected OFF
5 and the Network should be set to “Private”

And have you made sure that the workgroup names are the same on XP and Vista.
By default XP is MSHOME and Vista is WORKGROUP; they should be the same.
Also "Shared Docs" in XP is called "Public Folder" in Vista
