Problem- Sharing folders between Windows XP Home and Vista. I cannot share
files or print. I have no issues sharing folders between XP machines. Home Newtwork Setup: - SonyDesktop - XP Home Edition, same workgroup, Installed Link-Layer Topology Discovery, Firewall exception allows File and Print Sharing, shared folders (which allows network users to change files), hardline into router, No user accounts - AcerNB - Vista, same workgroup, Network Discovery On, File Sharing On, Public Folder Sharing On, Password protected sharing off, Location Type - Private, wireless connection to router, No user accounts Wireless Router - Linksys WRT54G From Sony (XP) 1) In network places, I cannot see shared folders on AcerNB (Vista). 2) I cannot ping or tracert AcerNB using computer name. - "Ping could not findhost" 3) I cannot ping and tracert ACerNB by using IP address - "Request times out" 4) I click to view the workgroup, I can see the AcerNB machine. Clicking it, I get "\\AcerNB is not accessible, You might not have perission to use this network resource...." 5) I can click my other XP machine in the view workgroup screen, and there is no issue connecting. From AcerNB 1) I cannot ping the computer name "Sony" 2) I can successfully ping Sony's IP 3) The tracert by IP was werid 4) Clicking "view full map" in the Network and Sharing Center, I do see the Sony computer. Should it be this hard? -- Thx! Trav |

-- "Trav" wrote in message ... Should it be this hard? -- No, Trav, it shouldn't. I've been fighting the same problem, but gave up. Networking between my XP and ME systems is simple and effective, but not with Vista. You have to do all sort of weird things to make it work, if you're lucky. Good luck. |

Have you tried the following:
In Vista Networking and Sharing: 1 Network Discovery ON 2 File Sharing ON 3 Public Folder Sharing ON 4 Password Protected OFF And have you made sure that the workgroup names are the same on XP and Vista. By default XP is MSHOME and Vista is WORKGROUP Also "Shared Docs" in XP is called "Public Folder" in Vista "Trav" wrote: Problem- Sharing folders between Windows XP Home and Vista. Server Message Blocks again. 5) I can click my other XP machine in the view workgroup screen, and there is no issue connecting. Should it be this hard? It's vaguely possible that a hardware problem, or maybe LSP / Winsock problem, causes the inability to ping AcerNB. Ping is a low level utility, and almost nothing stops it. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-physical-network-problems.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...-problems.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...-layer-in.html Personally, I'd double check for a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall or security component. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...ther-help.html But I'd concentrate on the inability to ping AcerNB by IP address. Fix that first. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...-tutorial.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
