Default printer sharing problem xp to vist

I have my hp 7960 installed on my xp machine but I can't connect to it
through the network from my vista machine. I can share all files and folders,
etc. just not the printer. I get an error "windows cannot connect to the
printer. the specified print monitor is unknown". I have no problems sharing
my hp 430 designjet, connect without a problem. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

I have a similiar problem. I can not connect to my HP laserjet 1200 printer
connected to my desktop computer running windows XP from my HP laptop
running Windows Vista. I can see all other shared folders and can see the
printer but when I try to connect I get the message "windows cannot connect
to the printer: access is denied". Note: did not have a problem with my old
windows XP laptop and i updated the drivers on both machines.

Did you install the Vista drivers from HP on your Vista machine? If you
didn't, that's your next step.

I did install the vista drivers on the vista machine but it always goes back
to the xp machine to get the drivers when I try to set up the connection for
the network printer.

It should not do that. Remove all the HP printer stuff from your Vista
machine. Now install the Vista drivers (which you will get from HP's
website). Here are links to HP's instructions how to install the printer
in a network:

After about 15 hrs. of trying to get my vista laptop to print through my xp
desktop via wireless router, I finally found this free download. It works
great. You need to download the software to both machines. Hope this helps.

After approx. 15 hrs. of getting "access denied" trying to get my vista
laptop to print through my xp machine via wireless router, I finally found
this free download. It may not be the same error message as yours but I
think this will work. You will need to install on both machines. It works
perfect on my system! Here's the address. http://www.networkmagic.com/

I'm sorry that you had such a hard time networking your computers. I'm
glad you found a solution, but for most people a third-party program is
unnecessary.
