Default Remote desktop connection vista to 2003 windows server

When creating a remote desktop connection using the ip address of the server
the credentials used to login to the server will not work. When using the ip
address the credentials created for example are 192.168.18.1\Username which
the server will not accept. When the login fails I can then remove the ip
address from the username on the login and then the server will accept the
username without the ip as the login. I never had this problem with xp and
was able to save a shortcut to the connection with the username and password
which would log me in to the server without a hitch. Is there a way to save
a connection or to login with vista which does not include the ip address
before the username in the credentials?
