Hi,

I have a laptop computer with Wireless and 10/100/1000 Ethernet port. My
Wireless connection is used for everything Internet and Lan access. Then my
Ethernet cable is plugged into my Linux machine directly which allows me to
communicate with it very quickly for remote desktoping and other stuff that
needs to be done quickly. I have always had this setup and it was always
fast. Though, when I had Windows XP I used IP over Firewire which was even
faster and then Microsoft took that support out out Vista, which I am really
upset over.

Anyways, my Wireless is set to DHCP and my Ethernet is set to manual IP with
an IP of 192.168.0.1 and a netmask of 255.255.0.0. In order to make Linux and
Windows talk nicely to each other, I need to have my Ethernet set as a
Private network. However, Vista says that it is an "Unidentified Network",
which I guess it really is.

But ... whenever I reboot my laptop, Vista resets it to a "Public" network
which has a whole bunch of restrictions, so I need to go in and manually
change it back to Private.

Is there something I can change so that it keeps it as a Private network
_Permanently_? I don't care about all the security and whatnot, because the
only thing this port will ever be connected to is my Linux machine. It's
really freakin annoying to change it after every reboot, so is there
something that can fix this? If not, can the MS Vista devs fix this in a
patch?

My system is Windows Vista Home Premium with all the latest updates from
Windows Update. Also, the firewall is turned off for the network card since
it's not needed.

I'm having this problem as well and would like a solution. I enjoy being
able to stream content on my 360, but changing the network to private after
every reboot is tedious and unacceptable.

Your answer is in the screen were you manually change network discovery to
Private (Help me chose) ...

``Warning
Choosing "Private" permanently changes the firewall configuration to allow
communication. This can be a security risk. For more information, see What
are the risks of allowing programs through a firewall?``

I think the firewall pops in after you make the change ...
Because Vista doesn't`t see the firewall on at start-up, it changes the LAN
settings.

Solution: turn the firewall on and create exceptions ... just more work
....

the
only thing this port will ever be connected to is my Linux machine.
It's
really freakin annoying to change it after every reboot, so is there
something that can fix this? If not, can the MS Vista devs fix this in
a
patch?

My system is Windows Vista Home Premium with all the latest updates
from
Windows Update. Also, the firewall is turned off for the network card
since
it's not needed.

I understand how to make exceptions in windows firewall, but I don't know
which program I would allow in order to stop this from happening. The
firewall does not display a message when I set it as a private network
telling me that I need to unblock something.

Which program should I allow in order to stop this issue?

I think the firewall pops in after you make the change ...
Because Vista doesn't`t see the firewall on at start-up, it changes the LAN
settings.

Solution: turn the firewall on and create exceptions ... just more work
...

Still having the problem. I was hoping you could give me some clarification
on what you mean. I already have windows firewall on at startup. You said I
should make exceptions. What exceptions would I make to stop the network
from changing to public on each reboot?
