Default wireless lap top cant connect

Hello, i have a gateway computer (laptop) that we upgraded to vista.
everything is great except one problem. our wireless connection doesnt work.
it did at first but now there is no connection.
the computer will connect to the internet if i plug directly into the
laptop. i have no idea how or where i would begin to try and fix this.

i dont know if this will be any help but under my connection icon when you
open that it only has the network for aol dial up.
do i need to install a new network?

Thank you very much-

Many laptops have a slide button that activates wi-fi. If this is
turned off, your internet access will not work. Look for a slide button
on the front or side of your laptop and see if that works.
