I have the exact same drive and am experiencing the same problem. Unless
anyone else has found a solution, I guess we'll just wait until Vista is
officially released, then ask WD when they're willing to help.

WD can't offer assistence for a beta product, not even to say if this is a
known problem.

I'm not too worried about this, I'd just like to know if it is something I
can fix myself or if I'll have to wait for the final release of Vista so WD
will offer assistence (of course by then my warranty will be up and I'm sure
I'll have to pay...

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Are you trying the XP drivers for it?

Looks like the issue has been resolved in Vista RC1.

Well, I'm running RC2 and I'm still experiencing this problem. I also
experienced the problem running RC1. Strangely though, I connected this same
drive to a Vista RC1 machine at work, and it worked fine. However, it is not
a problem with malfunctioning hardware, because the drive works just fine on
the "problem" machine when that machine is running XP SP2.

How would I use the XP drivers? I get the error message before any drivers
are requested, and the device is never listed in the Device Manager. I had
thought of trying the XP drivers but haven't been able to figure out exactly
how to do so.

I don't see a driver you can download from the WD site, it just says XP
already knows. It seems to me you might have to wake Vista up for it to see
your drive. Try rebooting without the drive connected and then plug the
drive in to see if it is recognized. If that doesn't work, use the Device
Manager to scan for hardware, maybe it will be seen. Also check device
manager to make sure the drive is not hiding another name.

If nothing seems to work, boot in safe mode and check the Device manager to
see if the drive shows up. If it does, remove it and try again in a normal
boot.

I don't know for sure, but since the latest build had almost none of the
Linksys Network drivers, I would have to say they have not yet been added.
Hopefully the RTM build will have more drivers included.

I have been hesitating, but I will go ahead and try my external USB drive to
see if it works. It uses an external power supply, so if you have one for
yours, you might try that also.
