Default Sound device: do I have it or not?

Device Manager reports under Sound,Video etc.
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio
There is a speaker icon in the Systray and I can hear Windows sounds.
However when I go to Control Panel Text-To-Speech and click on Preview
Voice there is an error:
"This voice cannot be played. Please try selecting another voice or
selecting a different output device"
What is wrong?

Same result here ("no audio device on your system"), using an Audigy 4
card from Creative.

My guess is that the drivers are not yet Vista ready. The one I am
using is for XP, but there are beta Creative drivers on their WEBsite,
if your audio device is from the same company.

When Vista is released, this should be resolved - IF that's truly the
problem.
