Default Vista and Linksys

Started using Vista on Compaq computer. If computer is directly wired to dsl
connection and Linksys router (VoIP WRTP54G) is turned off we can connect to
Internet. If the router is turned on - no connectivity - can't find network.
Any suggestions?
