You didn't mention what make and model your touchpad is, but try this
approach:

Open Control Panel Hardware and Sound Mouse.

Look for the Device Settings tab, there should be an option to deactivate
the touchpad.

That question has nothing to do with Vista and would be better asked in a
public hardware or laptops group.
Nonetheless - it depends entirely on your laptop. Some have a a switch or
other option to turn off the touch pad. Some have no such option. You
should check the documentation for your machine or ask this somewhere like
comp.sys.laptops and include the exact make and model of your machine.

what charlie said:

click the Start "Orb" (button), click on "Control Panel", double click
the Mouse icon, go to the "Device Settings" tab, click on "Disable",
click "OK" and close control panel. Now your touchpad will not get "in
your way".

the reson i stated deliberatly that i'm on vista is because the way you all
describe is the way i thought it would be too. but when i go to the mouse
properties and click devise settings it is an almost empty that page that
only has 2 options to click they are OK and CANCEL. IT SAYS IT IS SYNAPTICS
POINTING DEVIcE - V9 1.0 27 OCT06 and underneeth that it says [EVALUATION
COPY].there is no way to click on the botton to disable internal pointing
devise when external USB pointing devise is attached. therefore i thought it
to be a vista THING! i can only find drivers for the mouse but my touchpad
works, go figure! any other options?

when i go to the device manager it list it as mice and other pointing
devices." P/S2 Mouse" it must be it because i have disconected my usb mouse
and that is all that is left and the touchpad still works. but there is no
obviouse way to deactivate it, just uninstall the driver which is as good as
perm, is that the only way to surmount this obsticle? i will need it on
trains and such ( the touchpad that is) and am hesitant to do that. thanks
for your imput and patience.

Bobby:
On HP and Dell laptops there is a button usually along the top to
turn off the touch pad. Have a great day.

u can let device manager search for new hardware and it will find it,if
it's deleted, but you should just be able to "enable" it when u want
to, if all you have done is disabled it. that just takes a moment.

Unless it has been added in recent models that I haven't yet seen, the
ThinkPad does not provide a way to disable the touchpad. One of my clients
tapes a piece of cardboard over the touchpad on his machine.
