Default Remote Desktop Connection Protocol Error

Using Vista Ultimate at home over a standard (default settings) VPN to work
network, connecting via RDC to Vista Business.

Everything worked fine for a couple of hours and now the connection keeps
failing with the error:

"Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try
connecting to the remote computer again."

Trying to reconnect within the next 5 minutes or so appears to connect to
the remote computer as far as the screen that would normally display the
CTRL+ALT+DEL login option but instead of that the following error is
displayed:

"This network connection does not exist"

With an OK button. Clicking OK closes the connection.

I've done some searching and all I can find is a mention of GigE causing
this error but we aren't on GigE just Fast ethernet.

Anyi deas?

We have many cases like this one in XP, but I haven't seen it in Vista. This
link may help.

Default Remote Desktop Connection Protocol Error

Network resources or certain programs may be preventing (hogging
bandwidth) proper network communication from occuring. Try restarting
the server or PC. If you are not the administrator then he/she will have
to reset your RDP settings.

You can try (if you are the admin) sending a "shutdown -r -t 01" script
to restart your computer remotely if you can get to the command prompt
fast enough before the protocol error knocks out your connection. Wait a
few minutes and you should be able to remote in without the error. You
can then troubleshoot what program was hogging/locking up resources.
