It sounds like you're using a 32 bit version of Windows (Vista?)

Search the Web for "windows 4gb". In Google, you'll get millions of hits.

One fix is to install Vista 64. Unfortunately, it cannot be installed over a
32 bit OS as an upgrade. You'd need to do a clean install.

If you contemplate going that route, check whether Vista 64 drivers are
available for all of your peripherals (printer, scanner, etc.)

Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn

See the following: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605/en-us
Yes it is about 32 bit Windows, but wait, keep reading, you'll come to a
part that details ALL of the requirements to use 4GB or more. Using a 64 bit
OS is just one of the requirements, but not the only requirement. More than
likely, your computer's BIOS just is not configured properly, or the chipset
on your motherboard does not support more than 4 GB.

What motherboard do you have? It's likely a problem with the motherboard.

That motherboard only supports 4 GB of RAM. This means that even with a 64
bit OS the OS will only use about 3.25 GB. You need a motherboard that
supports more than 4 GB.

If not RAM then at least an address space lager than 4GB (which that
chipset doesn't)
