Default Disc Cleanup, Temporary Files

I thought I'd use disc cleanup to clear up some space on my main hard drive,
but under "Temporary Files" it lists the size as being 44.5 GB. What's
included in temp files, and doesn't 44.5 GB seem like a lot? Will this delete
anything important like personal or program files? Thanks

It is a lot, but you're not going to lose anything needed.

You know how good it feels when you haven't had a s**t for two or
three days, and then you produce such a big one that you seriously
wonder whether its going to flush away or not. Well, that's exactly
how good your computer is going to feel when it gets rid of all that
unwanted stuff. :-)

Default Disc Cleanup, Temporary Files

Hi Jacob07,

See:

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...63fca13ab622a5
and
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...53e44e7350166d

One says "Used Vista Disk clean up, 40GB gone in a minute !!! "

"i delete them deletes nearly everything on my comp"

So, it's wise not to use the function until the confusion (bug or whatever) is cleared.

Note that I'm not seen such problem in my Vista systems here.

Thanks for the reply. I agree with you and think it probably best to not run
cleanup on this item. It seems almost impossible for temporary files to take
up that much room. Hopefully their will be an update to the disk cleanup soon.

Hi Jacob07,

You're welcome.

You can manually clear the TEMP folder though, or check the total disk space used by the Temp folder. To open the Temp folder of your user account, type %TEMP% in the Start, search box and press {ENTER}.

It shows the size of the "Temp" (AppData/ Local/ Temp)folder as being 22.3GB
in size. It should be safe to manually delete all these files? I noticed that
the windows acount user pictures that are shown on the welcome screen are in
this folder. Are they just copies or does this matter? Thanks

Yes. It's generally safe to delete files in the %TEMP% folder. However, as it shows 22.3 GB, I'd exercise some caution before clearing them. Check if there are any programs or important files within those folders. Perhaps you may move them to a different location in the hard drive, observe for few days, and then delete them.

acount user pictures that are shown on the welcome screen are in this folder

They'll be recreated automatically upon next boot.

Disc Cleanup * Warning *

I used disc clean up this morning. There were some additional options
for user "backup" or "temp" files. It was a large number (in GB). But I
went ahead and used it anyway.

Very bad.

It deleted all my icons and program menu shortcuts. It is *NOT*
recommended that you use Microsofts Disc Cleanup program.

Thank goodness, I imaged my hard drive last night after installing SP1.

If you'd like to see the imager I used that has now saved me twice,
visit this thread. There are several utilities that I recommend for
Vista:

Whew. Thanks for finding that fix. I was really surprised that disk
cleanup did what it did. Now it can be used as intended.
