I have a desktop computer running XP Pro SP2 and a laptop running Vista
Business. The desktop is connected via ethernet to a Linksys 4 port router/WAP and the laptop connects thru the wireless network. Everything was working fine until yesterday when I discovered I could not print from the laptop to the printer connected to the desktop (I was able to last week). I now find that I can see the laptop from the desktop but I can't see the desktop or printers from the laptop. I suspect an update to either Vista or XP has caused this as I haven't made any configuration changes recently. I have followed the Knowledge Base article that deals with this issue but it has not resolved the problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem? |

I have followed you suggestions with the following results:

This would be a lot more useful with 3 computers, but if you only have 2, we'll have to try it as is. Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip addresses). 1. Open Notepad. 2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad. 3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable. 4. If the text is not easily read, then: * Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things, then continue with Step 5. * Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything). * Open Notepad. * Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked, check it. If checked, uncheck it. * Return to Step 2. 5. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary. 6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\". 7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag". 8. Wait patiently. 9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post. Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online. ##### Start CDiag Assembled Code @echo off set FullTarget1=Descartes 192.168.200.100 set FullTarget2=Aristotle 192.168.200.102 set FullTarget3= set FullTarget4= set FullTargets=%FullTarget1% %FullTarget2% %FullTarget3% %FullTarget4% set FullTargets=%FullTargets% 127.0.0.1 set PingTargets=www.yahoo.com 66.94.230.32 192.168.200.1 Set Version=V1.40 @echo CDiagnosis %Version% c:\cdiag.txt @echo Start diagnosis for %computername% c:\cdiag.txt @echo Full Targets %FullTargets% c:\cdiag.txt @echo Ping Targets %PingTargets% c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo Over All Analysis c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo Enumerate Shares c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt net share c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo Adhoc Browser View c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt net view c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo Full Targets Analysis %FullTargets% c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%FullTargets%) do ( @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% net view %%a" c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt net view %%a c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo Ping Targets Analysis %PingTargets% c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%PingTargets%) do ( @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" c:\cdiag.txt @echo. c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. c:\cdiag.txt @echo End diagnosis for %computername% c:\cdiag.txt notepad c:\cdiag.txt :EOF ##### End CDiag Assembled Code -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. Hi Chuck,
Thanks or your advice. A friend who has an identical laptop visited my on the weekend ad he was able to connect to my desktop without any problem which led me to believe that something had corrupted in my Vista OS. I restored from an image I took a few months ago and I'm back to being able to see my desktop shared folders and printers attached to it. However, I have discovered 2 other issues that I'd like your thoughts on. 1. Vista network map now shows the desktop but can't place it on the map even though the netowrk location is "Private" 2. When I try to turn off password protected sharing in the network and sharing centre and chose Apply, it still shows password protected sharing as on. I have disabled the blank password option in the security policy but still can't turn it off. Thanks in advance Chris "Chuck [MVP]" wrote: On Sat, 13 Oct 2007 01:58:00 -0700, silva_shox wrote: "Chuck [MVP]" wrote: On Thu, 11 Oct 2007 20:27:00 -0700, silva_shox wrote: "Chuck [MVP]" wrote: On Mon, 8 Oct 2007 05:56:00 -0700, silva_shox wrote: I have a desktop computer running XP Pro SP2 and a laptop running Vista Business. |

There is an odd issue with an IE update (yes, Internet Explorer), which has been mentioned rarely in connection with Windows Networking issues. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/09/changes-in-internet-explorer-security.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/0...-security.html If that doesn't help, I'd try to diagnose the problem with logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer. There is an odd issue with an IE update (yes, Internet Explorer), which has been mentioned rarely in connection with Windows Networking issues. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/09/changes-in-internet-explorer-security.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2007/0...-security.html If that doesn't help, I'd try to diagnose the problem with logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. Hi Chuck, 1. I am running browstat in a command window as an administrator. If I simply type browstat it shows me the list of options but browstat status just returns me to C:\ 2. How do I know if the nvidia firewall is running? I've looked in the usuall places and can't find anything. I tried disabling power management as suggested in one of the posts but it made no difference. 3. I've removed IVP6 from the stack. Still no further with this. Anymore suggestions? The nVidia firewall is being discussed in several forums. Here's my article, with links to other web sites. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/0...ia-nforce.html If that fails to help, let's enumerate the symptoms. Hello again Chuck, My solution turned out to be a temporary fix. The problem returned a day later but I had to go on a business trip the next day so didn't get to do anything until I got back yesterday. I've run cdiag on each of the machines and the results are shown below. SNIP I hope this gives you some clues as to what's going on. Someone suggested the problem was that the Desktop and the laptop are on different subnets and Vista security blocks communications between different subnets. Is this the case? Regards Chris Chris, With Descartes having 192.168.200.101, and Aristotle 192.168.200.102, I don't see a subnetting problem. I do see a couple concerns. Get rid of that, please. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...-clean-up.html When you ran browstat on Aristotle, were you running the command window as an administrator? Read the nVidia post, and remove IPV6. Then rerun CDiag on both computers, and we'll see if there's any improvement. -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
