Hey guy and gals, I got a Sony Vaio desktop running Vista Business. For
the life of me I cannot join my work domain which is a mac server. I can
see every pc on your network but cannot join the domain. I get the
error message: The specified domain either does not exist or could not
be contacted. Someone please help this is driving me crazy.

Hi slowcruizer,

To enable Windows Vista to connect to Mac OS X with Windows File
Sharing
enabled, you will need to change the following policy in Windows
Vista:

StartRunsecpol.msc [enter]

Click on "Local Policies" -- "Security Options"

Navigate to the policy "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication
level" and double-click it to get its Properties. By default Windows
Vista sets the policy to "NTVLM2 responses only". Use the drop-down
arrow to change this to "LM and NTLM – use NTLMV2 session security if
negotiated".

reboot and see how it goes,

Hmmm...

I found this page that has various methods of getting Vista to hook up
to an OS X Server, the way i thought might work is also mentioned....

Could it be a windows firewall ,norton security, or windows defender
issue?

I've tried everything even some hints I got from other places with no
luck. I can access the sever still and log into my public drive thru
network and sharig but still can't get this pc to join the domain

Yes indeed, one sometimes looks for the most complicated solution while
the most simplest could be right under our nose although it is funny
that you can access the server.

You could indeed turen off the Windows Firewall and Norton Internet
Security (just in case the Norton Firewall is running). Windows Defender
should have no affect on things.

If you can try and join the domain once again and after a minute or so
can you check your Event Viewer in Vista and see if there are any errors
or warnings for the time you tried to join the domain.

Can you tell me the version of the OS X Server.

Is Vista running DHCP and is the Server running DNS?

I do not know much about Mac Servers but I know that in Windows Servers
you can put a computer into the domain list so the computer does not
have to ask permission to join as the admin has already given the go
ahead by putting it name in the list...

I'm sure we will get to the bottom of it..

how would I find out if the machine is running DHCP or DNS? Kind of
newbie at this. I'm running Mac OS X Server 10.4.10.
