Default Laptop to Desktop Internet Connection Problems

I have a laptop running on Windows Vista that is connected to a wireless
router. I also have a desktop that has Windows XP that I want to connect
to the internet. I have tried to connect the two computers through and
ethernet cord, but the computers will try connecting to each other but
it doesn't work. They seem not to recognize each other. Any help would
be greatly appreciated!
