Default Backup fails with 0x81000019

Further information on my problem.

Checking dates I find that the problem began at about the same time I
installed/used a partition program (EASEUS) to merge two partitions
(I had a 10 GB empty partition in front of my main C: partition, EASEUS
merged them and appeared to be successful.

Checking the root directory of my J: drive (the one that was repartitioned)
I find that the j:\System Volume information item has only 'tracking.log' as
contents and is dated at the same time as the problem arose. I suspect that
I need to 'recreate' System Volume Information on the C: (although the
backup problem is on the J: drive) but need advice.

For the last several days my automatic backup (Vista home premium, data)
has failed with the error
A shadow copy could not be created. Check the system event log for more
information. (0x81000019)

Backing up is to a USB 2.0 external drive with 491 of 931 GB free.
Checking in system event log, I see shadow copy starts and then stops, but
no error information.

I have tried reboot, and checking the settings for virtual memory, both my
C: and my J: (the USB drive being used for backup) are set for system
managed.

Backup had been working just fine until recently.

Any other places to check?

Michael
