Sounds like something is monitoring for activity during hibernation.
What do you mean by that? Why would a keyboard or mouse "monitor during
hibernation"? I'm not sure I understand. Anyway, not wireless mouse or
keyboard, only the native stuff the laptop came with. And the HD
trashing is happening when the laptop is idle AND when I'm working on it
- it never stops.
many of the functions you've
disabled in the name of expediency are the ones designed to help your
system
I understood you but I'm trying to figure out how to stop my HD from
working 24/7 right now :-) I deactivated all these because it is
suggested in many threads about this problem. I'll probably reactivate
many (Defender, Superfetch etc) once I have this figured out.

As long as it's not in a power save mode, a hard drive is always
spinning when the PC is on. The behaviour you describe is
perfectly normal. The brief intermittent disk accesses will have
negligible impact on battery discharge. I've seen this behaviour
in every PC I've used, since Win95. If you want to save battery
power, make sure the WiFi hardware is turned off while you're
not using it. Most laptops have a physical switch to do this.
Also, turning down the screen brightness will help.
