Near the end of installation, on what is probably the last reboot, Vista
seems to try & load a video driver but loses sync with the monitors (Dig LCD
& Analog CRT). Card is a Nvidia FX5500 in an XP2600+. Trying to boot into
Safe Mode gets an "Installation Not Complete" message but in normal mode you
can't see the image to complete the install. Suggestions?

Did you find the answer? I have the same problem, but with a different video
card...the onboard video on the MSI 945GT speedster

Not really. Was able to complete install by putting in a very old nVidia
MX400 video card. Then put the FX5500 back in but video goes black as soon
as the driver is loaded-even with the latest driver from nVidia. There is a
newer RC-1, Build 5728 that is floating around-probably not legally. That
version will also not install with the FX5500 BUT will run after completing
the install with the MX400. A lot of people are having this problem but it
doesn't seem to be a majority. Can't say I loved vista-looks nice but wastes
lots of screen space and is no better organized than XP.

I have Vista x64 running on a partition on my workstation. I had Vista x86
Beta 2 running on the media center before trying the RC1 that failed. I
tried changing some BIOS parameters and got the black screen with the
blinking cursor in place of the plain old black screen.

I agree with you about the screen real estate and as far as media center
goes, Vista Beta 2 took about 20 minutes to display the menu with 30 movies
if it didn't hang. I was hoping that was fixed in RC1. MCE 2005 worked
pretty well with this with super fast navigation through media files.

I also thought that "glass" business was overated.

This appears to be hardware related. With this motherboard (MSI 945GT
Speedster), sometimes the onboard video gets confused about which interface
to output the video on. A key sequence (cntl-alt-f4 for DVI) can restore the
video.

This happens frequently when coming out of standby. With the DVI
connection, if the Television is not attached to the interface when the PC
comes out of standby, the DVI link does not reestablish.

The key sequence can restart the DVI session, but default resolutions are
used, requiring exiting from Media Center to the desktop and using the mouse
to change the resolution back.

I took a break from figuring this out and haven't picked it back up again.
I was hoping to nail down the exact circumstances and/or maybe have some
scripts running in Media Center.

I decided instead to revisit the Xbox360 Extender idea.
