You can use Google and find out how to reset the FW on Vista. You might find
the article for XP, which is the same to reset the FW between the two
O/S(s). See if that works for the reset of the FW.

It could be that you have malware running on the computer that has knocked
out or is knocking out the FW too.

Like I said, Netsh is the same command for XP or Vista. Did you do it? You
have to fix the FW before you do anything else.

I'm afraid "said something about..." is not at all helpful. What was
the exact error message? What changes to your system, if any, did you
make immediately prior to the onset of the problem?

I have the same issue on Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. It says windows
firewall is disabled. Windows Security Center tells me that Windows
Firewall is 'off'.
When I go to control panel and select the 'Firewall' icon. I get the
following message in the Windows Firewall pane:

" Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your
computer. _What_are_the_recommended_settings_?"

And to the right of this statement is a selectable text that reads:
"_Update_Settings_Now_"

When I select "_Update_Settings_Now_" I get the followingpop-up message
window which reads: "Windows Firewall was unable to make the requested
updates."

I attempted the cmd 'netsh reset firewall" with no change.

Ideas?
