I have a Dell laptop using Vista Home Premium and a desktop using xp pro
going through a Dlink Dir655 router.

The Vista laptop can see the Xp system including shared drives. The XP
system can see the laptop shared drive but when you try to access it via xp i
get an error that says the network is not accessible for Vista. i do not
have permission to use this network resource.. I have already loaded the
file via microsoft requred for networking and I have the Vista set to private
networking and the drive completely shared. I disabled the antivirus and
firewall and this did not help. I even reset the router defaults and this did
not help.

Need some assistance from someone related to this.

Make sure you have assigned permissions in the Security tab. This search

I have very similar issues. Existing XP network, working printer and file
shares. Add a Vista laptop. Then three scenarios:

1) Vista file share is visible on XP, can be mounted, can read but not
write, possibly a permissions problem on Vista although the share is logged
on using the laptop admin user, who has Full Control rights to the drive.

2) XP file share in visible on Vista but will not mount. Vista says it's
already mapped with a different user name and password, but there are no
other shares mounted.

3) XP Printer share is visible on Vista but will not mount. Error 0x000006be
and "spooler not running", but spooler IS running on both PCs. No sign of
rubbish from failed driver installs in the registry. Disabling firewalls does
not help.

The MS support site will not recognize my Product ID, because it is an OEM
product. The OEM (who will be named and shamed soon) says "We dont provide
network support for network sharing". The laptop will be returned to the
retailer soon if the problem can't be resolved, I'll look for a second-hand
XP laptop instead.

This problem seems fairly common -- someone must know what's going on?

The "... not accessible ..." and similar errors can come from a number of
problems. Personal firewalls, incorrect network settings, and security /
sharing settings can all contribute to the not accessible error.

Thanks to the MVPs for their suggestions and links. I went through everything
I could, still no luck. Then I tried a wired connection, rather than
wireless. Everything worked. So there must be some setting somewhere on the
laptop wireless or the hub -- I don't think I'll bother to find out what,
I'll just shuffle network cards so I don't need wireless.

For anyone with similar problems with file and printer sharing, trying a
wired connection instead of wireless might be a useful diagnostic, even if it
can't be a permanent solution.
