When i have a folder of photos in an order i want and do a select all and
rename the first pic to (1) why does vista take it upon itself to change the order and scramble the pics into some illogical order???!! SO if i had pics of a house being built one would be a concrete slab the next ends up being shingling the roof as pic two.... it doesnt make sense. I have been burning my pics onto a disc to load into an xp computer ... put them in the order i want then put them back on to vista. Can someone tell me how to turn the "what Vista feels like" order off? THis has been driving me crazy!! |

If you're renaming by numbers you MIGHT run into the alpha verse numeric sort issue. Since what you want to do has to follow in a logical order a quick way to sort would be by sorting by "date modified", since your first picture would be digging the hole, then the concrete slab, starting to put up walls, the roof and so on. Open the folder in Windows Explorer. Right click on a blank area, then sort by, then date modified. If that option doesn't show, click on "more" find it, check it. Be aware you may also need to click on the move up button to get the sort choice you want to bubble up the list, otherwise even if your check something, it may not show. Good luck with the house. ;-) |

the house was just an example .... all i know is in xp i would put a bunch of
pics that said whatever on them, id hit select all put the title in such as 25th birthday (1) and it would number them in the order i had them. In vista when i do this it gives the number to to a pic 3 rows down. It just picks for all over ... even if the pics are in the original order they came out of the camera in. Hopefully this sounds a little more clear .... if i can maybe explain it again more clear please ask me. thanks "Adam Albright" wrote: On Mon, 29 Oct 2007 03:50:00 -0700, thxheynow wrote: PLease can someone help ... is any clarification needed? I dont know how else to explain this ..... if i have a bunch of pics, put
them in a folder drag and drop them in the order i want then go to select all and rename. I'll type something like "Vacation (1)" on the first pic, when id press enter in xp all the pics would number sequential number order. In vista ill do this hit enter and the second pic will be something from 3 rows down labeled pic (2). Theyll be in some other kind of order. not the order i sat there putting them in. I dont know how else to be more clear on this. its not for doing slideshows or anything although any pic i click on in an album does give me the same problem. when i click a pic to full screen and then click to see the next pic it will select something 10 pictures ahead instead of showing me the pic that was right next to it in the folder. Ok, so you want to RENAME a bunch of photos in a folder. First understand how you drop files in a folder has no effect on how they will get resorted. They will be sorted based on whatever sort option you selected for the new folder. Which if you're trying to keep them in some order should be the same sort order in the folder you're moving from AND the new folder as well. I'll assume you had both folders sorted by name. So you first mistake is assuming "how you want" meaning in which order you drag and drop or copy or paste them to the new folder will effect how they get renamed. It does not. I just tried myself using Windows Explorer. 1. I made a new folder, called it vacation photos. 2. I then copied 5 images to this folder. 3. Before copying, the files were named as follows: a. Billy b. Cory c. Frank d. Tom e. Zeb 4. Once the files were copied to the new folder I clicked 'select all' from Edit on the tool bar. All 5 images were highlighted, meaning they were selected and could be worked on as a group. 5. I right clicked on the first one (Billy) then renamed to Vacation (1) After doing that the result was the five files got renamed to Vacation (1) through Vacation (5). Billy got renamed to Vacation (1), Cory to Vacation (2) and so on. If you wanted Frank to be Vacation (1) and not Vacation (3) you would have had to rename it before to change it's position or do it after. In order words there is no way to do what you want... have files renamed in the sequence to place them in the new folder and Windows never could do that that I'm aware because it would make no sense. The reason being Windows isn't designed to "remember" how you place files in a folder. Instead it gives many options to sort by, but not that one. Using windows picture gallery, copy pics to your new folder. Sort them as you like, then try method described below from the help files; Name multiple pictures at once Using the same word or phrase, you can rename an entire group of pictures at once. Here's how: Click to open Windows Photo Gallery. Hold down the CTRL key, and then click the pictures that you want to rename. Right-click the pictures, and then click Rename. In the Info pane, type the new name for that group of pictures in the name box. Each picture will be given the new name with a different sequential number, like this: Summer vacation 2005 (1), Summer vacation 2005 (2), Summer vacation 2005 (3), and so on. -- Dave T. I've learned that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed. |

Wow thank you so much Dave .... that was the quick solution i needed. In xp
you just had to select them now when i do it it renames them the way i want and doesnt jumble them around .... the solution was holding the control key while highlighting them. thanks so much!!
