I have a network of 2 pc's, i can access my second pc from the 1st pc through
the network to share files and this works ok.
the 1st pc has the internet connection and the connection (adsl) has the
setting ticked to allow access over my network to the internet, but yet i
cannot access the internet from my 2nd pc.

Barry,

I'd bet that your 2 computers are using a locally assigned set of IP addresses,
and no Internet Sharing. You need to setup Internet Sharing, which is the
second half of using a cross-over cable, as you are doing.

What is your infrastructure? Do you use a router?

I have had this working in the past and I dont remember setting up ICS.
I tried the second link you posted but as the page loads up I then cannot do
anything else and my disk goes mad. had to shut down and start again. this
happened twice.

Are your PCs linked with a crossover cable, or are they linked using the
facilities of your ADSL router?

If linked via the router, then on the pc that does have internet
access, make a note of the Gateway and DNS settings. Go over to the
other PC and apply these settings there, and you should have internet
access there also.

If using a crossover cable to link pc-to-pc, then you'll need to use
internet connection sharing.

ok thanks everybody.
my 2 pc's were not on the same subnet. I thought this did not matter as I
could access files on the other pc over the network.
I should have known this as I used to work in networking, just on a much
larger scale. now that makes me feel dumb.
