Default Printer networking between Vista & XP computers not printing

Hi
I have a home network where the base computer is WinXP networked to 2
other computers, one XP the other Vista. When I added the 3rd
computer(Vista) I have not been able to print from it to a printer attached
to the base(XP) computer and have been through all the help files given. This
computer does connect to the
internet OK via the WinXP one but will not print anything. I have today tried
reinstalling the printer on both machines to try to get it to work, but it
still doesn't print from the Vista machine.

I am grateful for more advice & steps to follow for me to get this to work
(even if it means rechecking everything- user acounts, printers etc). I am
baffled why it won't work when I seem to have followed all the help files.
I look forward to some reply -many thanks

Can you get file sharing working, both ways? Start there. Do you have current
printer drivers? Are they drivers written for Vista?

Have a read of the above.
When you add the XP connected Printer to Vista, I did it through Vista's
Network and sharing centre Add Network device browse for xp'sPrinter.

Thanks Chuck for your reply.
It still doesn't work.
On the Vista machine the printer shows (is listed) in control panel printers
but nothing happens when printing a test page ( from Properties) or from any
document from the Vista comp. I remain baffled.Any other helpful suggestion
gratefully received!

Thanks

Default Printer networking between Vista & XP computers not printing

Hi Mick
Thanks very much for your helpful reply.
As I have just stated in my reply to Chuck on this, the shared printer shows
in control panel printerslist but doesn't appear in Network centre printers
list.
When I try adding this printer it is therein the available printers list &
the wizard goes through the installation process & says it completes
successfully (but it is lying!).No printer shows in the network printer box &
the test page doesn't print.

How do I check if the printer driver for this is on the Vista comp? Do I
need the printer driver on the Vista comp? Why doesn't it work as the printer
shows in contol panel Printer folder?

Any further help & advice I am very grateful for (btw I am only back home
with these computers at the weekend-hence why I haven't had chance to look at
this or reply until this weekend!).

Thanks & best wishes

Try connecting to the printer differently.

Default Printer networking between Vista & XP computers not printing

I have found that on the Vista machine printer sharing is disabled (in
Network centre) and the box says no printer attached to computer and the
option to enable printer sharing is greyed out & so unavailable!

How can this be when the printer is listed in the printer folder in control
panel?

Is there a control on Norton (my virus/firewall protection) to be adjusted?
I have looked for this but cannot see anything about enabling printer sharing
there.

Any more ideas on how to get this printer sharing turned on? and to get this
Vista comp to share my printer......
I have looked at the info you have suggested but am not sure if connecting
in that different way is the right thing to try before trying to get printer
sharing enabled somehow!..help please.............

Many thanks

Default Printer networking between Vista & XP computers not printing

I have still not solved this and so still cannot print from the Vista comp to
the XP one that has the printer attached.
I even installed Network Magic trial to try & solve this for me but that
didn't work either!
(further to my last post I suppose printer sharing is turned off on the
Vista machine as the printer is attached to the XP machine!).
I am grateful for some further help/advice please..............(meanwhile I
will keep retrying to get this to work). Thanks
