Default Issue with Media Player and local network

We have 10 machines on our local network. 4 of them need to get files off of
one networked storage device for two programs that we use. One is our point
of sale software and the other is our engine parts diagram software. One of
the other machines is a Vista box(works fine) and the other three are XP pro
boxes(works fine).

The machine I have with the problem is a Vista box(home premium- Dell) The
problem that I have is when I try to use either of these programs that need
to pull data off the network, that process that is almost instantanious on
the other 4 machines, is painfully slow on this one Vista machine. 10-14
seconds to pull up the same data.

I can remedy this problem by doing one thing. If I open Windows Media player
11 and actually play a song, the same issue that takes 10-14 seconds with WMP
closed, now is as fast as the other machines with WMP 11 open. Something with
WMP being open and actually playing a song speeds up the network on this one
box.

All of the machines run AVG for AV and Windows defender. This box was
shipped from Dell with another AV program which I removed. But the problem
was there from day one.

Any idea's?

Thanks,

Andy

No help? Maybe I posted in the wrong area. Thought it was a network issue.
