Hi Robert,

I tried everything I could understand on the case study, without any luck.
I also just tried printing something on my wife's computer (which uses XP),
and nothing is happening. I don't get an error message, but it isn't
printing. There is nothing in the status field for the print queue. I then
tried printing something from her computer on my printer. It doesn't print,
but the status field says, "Error - Printing".

Six weeks ago I could print from any computer to any printer. Now, I can
only print on the printer attached to the computer.

I don't know what else to do.

If you get this resolved, I would surely like to know how - I'm having
the identical problem.

I'm still having the problem. I hope that it will magically go away when
Microsoft install a new fix, but so far it isn't happening. I'm leaving on a
trip in a few days. If it doesn't work when I get back, I'll contact
Microsoft directly and pay to correct the problem.

Let me know if you find an answer. I'm pretty sure it is a bug, since
things used to work fine, but I may have just changed a setting or something.

wireless printer on the network, I can no longer print to OneNote from Word.
The problem first became visible to me around 26 December.

I am running an HP Pavlion with Vista Home. The network is Ethernet and
also hosts two PC's still operating on XP, but rarely used. The only major
update has been MS Office Service Pack 1, installed 12 December.

I am very frustrated by this since the installation was workingvery
effectively and I really loved the OneNote functionality. Surely this is a
bug.

The problem is fixed today. I did something different, and I've been able
to share two printers amongst all three computers on the network. The
solution was so simple, I cannot figure out why I didn't do it before.
Something seemed different today, so I don't know if something has changed.
At least it works now. Here is what I did:

1. Click the Start menu Click Network

An icon for every computer on the network should appear.

2. Double click on the icon for the computer with the printer you want to
access.

An icon for that printer should appear. (If not, go to that computer and
make sure that printer is shared.)

3. Double click the icon for that printer.

A window for that printer appears with a message that the printer is being
located. When it finds it, the printer is ready.

What I don't remember is doing these steps. I think after I set up sharing,
I went to my laptop and tried to print. When I tried to select the printer,
I got the "Active Directory" error message. In the instructions I had read
about sharing a printer, I don't remember reading that I had to do these
three steps. Maybe to some people it is obvious that you have to do these
steps, but to me it was only accidental that I stumbled onto it.

Anyway, it works now.

To Lyle and anyone else that has experieced this problem...HERE IS THE
DEFINITIVE FIX.
First...a summary of the problem.: Your network and all its computers
were working fine and then suddenly your Vista laptop stopped printing
wirelessly. The scenario is universally ocurring when a laptop
computer using Microsoft Vista cannot print wirelessly to a network
printer (of any manufacturer type) connected by USB to another
computer on the network (typically the desktop computer).. The desktop
(host) computer typically has the Windows XP operating system.
Typically, the printer can be viewed from the Vista laptop, It just
can't be accessed for printing. File sharing and all other aspects of
the wireless network work fine.
THE FIX IS RELATIVELY SIMPLE.
You must install the problem printer's Vista drivers onto the desktop
(host) computer.. Since the Vista drivers are backward compatable with
Windows XP, all other computers on the netwrk using the Windows XP
operating system will still work.. Additionally, you need to have the
Vista drivers for the host printer installed on the Vista laptop.

my guess is that many people are just living with the problem of not
being able to print wirelessly.

Thanks for the solution. My problem is somewhat different in that I am
working on two Vista boxes. I did something different in the procedure of
locating the printer, and everything worked. Before trying to print, I
clicked on Network, then my host icon. At that point, I have to enter my
user name and password. Then the printer icon. After those things were
located, I then went to the document I wanted to print on my laptop. When I
try to print, my host printer now appears in the list of printers and I can
select it and it works fine.

Before, all I did was to select the file and try to print it. I couldn't
get the icon to appear and got the directory domain error message. Microsoft
may simply have to change their instructions. This procedure may have been
obvious to some, but it wasn't to me.

I'm sure your solution will fix someone's problem. Thanks for the
information. You are right, most people probably just give up and live
without.

Wanted to say thanks, Lyle, for your advice to fixing the problem with my C4180 printer which I originally used with my Windows Xp and then bought a laptop with windows 7. I tried and tried............to get the printer to work as well on my laptop. Did everything but like you I missed the important step. Put in the correct drivers, etc. etc. but needed that last step (THE NETWORK). Viola, it prints. I'm really happy with my C4180 printer and did not want to go just yet and purchase a new printer. ANYWAY, thanks again.

The problem is fixed today. I did something different, and I've been able
to share two printers amongst all three computers on the network. The
solution was so simple, I cannot figure out why I didn't do it before.
Something seemed different today, so I don't know if something has changed.
At least it works now. Here is what I did:

2. Double click on the icon for the computer with the printer you want to

about sharing a printer, I don't remember reading that I had to do these
three steps. Maybe to some people it is obvious that you have to do these
steps, but to me it was only accidental that I stumbled onto it.

Anyway, it works now.

I also just tried printing something on my wife's computer (which uses XP),
and nothing is happening. I don't get an error message, but it isn't
