Default The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable

I have a home network with a Dell 4600 running Windows XP and a Dell XP410
running Vista Home Premium. I recently purchased a Dell 1420 Laptop connect
it via Ethernet to the network. After I set up the laptop, I was able to
print files from it to the Canon printer connected to the XP410. I was gone
for a month on a trip with the laptop. When I got back, I reconnected the
laptop ethernet cable to the Netgear router. When I try to print a file, I
get the message, "The Active Directory Domain Services is currently
unavailable."

Can anyone give me a clue as to what might have gotten reset? I have never
done anything with domains before, and other searches I've done suggest that
Home Premium doesn't support Active Directory.

Thanks.

It could be the name resolution. Posting the result of ipconfig /all here
may help.

How do I capture the results of the "ipconfig /all" command? I can se them,
but I don't know how to cut and paste them into a response. Thanks for your
help. I looked at the results, but I have no idea what I'm looking for.

You can do "ipconfig /all C:\ipconfig.txt". then copy the ipconfig.txt from
C drive.

Hi again Robert.

I was just on my desktop, and I hit the wrong button. When I went to press
the properties button as I was preparing to print a file, I accidently
pressed "Find a printer". I immediately got the same error message. If the
printer I want is not in the list and I want to find a new one, I can't do so.

I hope this additional information helps a bit.

Hi Robert,

I think you've lost me. I've read your website and others to understand
what to do, but I'm not sure what changes to make or how to make them. It is
a bit scary to me to get into changing DNS numbers when I have no idea what
I'm doing.

What mystifies me is why it worked fine a few weeks ago, and now it doesn't.
I haven't knowingly changed anything to do with DNS. Doing a query on the
web, I saw the same thing happened to other people.

I'll put my problem on hold until I can get some more information.

Thanks again for trying.

Do a simple test. Can you net view \\remotepcname?

Hi Robert,

I think you've lost me. I've read your website and others to understand
what to do, but I'm not sure what changes to make or how to make them. It
is
a bit scary to me to get into changing DNS numbers when I have no idea

I'm doing.

What mystifies me is why it worked fine a few weeks ago, and now it
doesn't.
I haven't knowingly changed anything to do with DNS. Doing a query on the
web, I saw the same thing happened to other people.

I'll put my problem on hold until I can get some more information.

Thanks again for trying.

Default The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable

Hi Robert,

In command prompt, I get the following dialog:

c:\Users\Lyle Cluggnet view \\remotepcname
System error 53 has occurred.

The network path was not found.

c:\Users\Lyle Clugg

(Note that on my desktop system, I get the same response, except there the
user is just "Lyle", not "Lyle Clugg". I'm not sure if they must be
identical on the two computers.)

I hope this helps.
