Default Connect Two Windows Vista Computers

I have two notebooks with Windows Vista Ultimate installed on them. They are
identical laptops with Realtek RTL8168/8111 networking cards. I am using a
Netgear MR814v2 router with firmware version 5.3 installed. Why is it so
difficult to get the two computers to see one another and share files? Both
have the Windows firewall turned off and no other firewalls are installed at
the moment. We are both part of the same workgroup, SLUTMONKEY.

We can both access the router using the web login and change settings there.
Any ideas? Is it just that Vista isn't compatible with this old router or am
I doing something wrong? Both computers have shared folders set to ON. Please
respond quickly. Thanks

Sorry - I forgot to mention that I don't even want the internet. I don't have
it plugged in to the modem - I just want the two computers to see each other.
