I've set up a computer network with the standard two nic system I had used on
XP on Vista Business. The Server and the clients are all running Vista Business. The Server has two 1gm Nvida Etnernet cards built into the mother board. The Server is connected to the internet through Lan 1 with the router being set to 192.168.1.1 and the ethernet set to obtain its addres from the router using DHCP. Lan 1 is setup for Internet Sharing. Lan 2 is set to 192.168.0.1 with the clients set to static IP addresses and using the Lan 2 address as the default gateway and DNS. The DNS suffix is set to mshome.net. The clients, NAS and network printer are connected together with the server through a 1gb switch on Lan 2. This setup worked fine under XP, but under Vista Business, the clients keep loosing internet access. I also noticed that Vista keeps changing the statis of Lan 2 from Private to Public. I'm hoping this something simple I missed because the fix is to reboot the server, then the clients can access the internet again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

We have some issues with this configuration.
1. The server should use static IP. 2. I would setup DHCP on the server. 3. It is better to setup DNS on the server -- Bob Lin, MS-MVP, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.HowToNetworking.com "Elliott" wrote in message ... Robert,
Thanks for your prompt response. I'm not sure which nic you're referring to?? Are you suggesting that I set Lan 1 to 192.168.1.1, the same address as the lan side of the router?? Lan 2 has a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and that address is set for DNS on Lan 2. "Robert L. (MS-MVP)" wrote: We have some issues with this configuration. 1. The server should use static IP. 2. Basically, none of NICs in the server should use dynamic IP and the you
should disable the DHCP in the router. -- Bob Lin, MS-MVP, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.HowToNetworking.com "Elliott" wrote in message ... Robert,
I've changed the IP address for Lan 1 to 198.168.1.10. The problem with disabling the DHCP in the router is that the second port on the router is managing 3 phone adapters and the router is providing IP addresses to the adapters. Hopefully, the static ip on Lan 1 will help resolve the problem. Elliott "Robert L. (MS-MVP)" wrote: We have some issues with this configuration. 1. The server should use static IP. 2. Robert,
Thank you. I don't know why I didn't think of setting LAN1 to a static IP address because I've mixed static and dynamic Ip address on a network before Your suggestion defenitely helped.
