My index is turned off. Every time I conduct a search, I am told to activate

Thank you very much!
I learned a lot today. For instance to 'ignore all'. The first option given in the tutorial didn't work, so I tried the second option. There I found index was actually enabled, as I thought it was. But then, following the advice I turned it of, and on again. That's when I learned the second thing; it doesn't take minutes. But, hours later, index appears to be running.... Again, thanks very much, Ted "brink" wrote: fotoflex;513257 Wrote: My index is turned off. Every time I conduct a search, I am told to activate index. In Options For Index, the buttons are grey. Way too quick!
I thought it worked, but with next try I got the familiar 'enable indexing?'. So tried the other suggested tutorials, but without luck. Q.: Why is index disabled to start with? Index never worked, but when your computer is empty, it's no problem. And why is there a button, when you can't use it to enable index? Any suggestions? Ted "fotoflex" wrote: Thank you very much! Q.: Why is index disabled to start with? Index never worked, but when your computer is empty, it's no problem. And why is there a button, when you can't use it to enable index? Any suggestions? Ted Ted, Vista will always ask if you would like to activate (enable) the index when you do a non-indexed search. If you happy with then Index being disabled, then you can just ignore it or click the X to close the activate notice. It will not hurt anything. It is just Vista's way of trying to make a helpful suggestion. Personally, I do not like the Index and think that it takes up to much resources and is not very accurate. I prefer the non-indexed searches, even if they take a tad bit longer to complete. If you would like the Index to be enabled again, then follow "Option One" to enable it, and make sure the box is checked in "Option Two". http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/69...e-disable.html If you have problems getting the Index enabled, then see this tutorial. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/85...h-service.html Hope this helps, Shawn -- brink *There are no dumb questions, just the people that do not ask them.* WWW.VISTAX64.COM (\"HTTP://WWW.VISTAX64.COM\") *Please post feedback to help others.* |

When you do a search and the click something and have to go back, the search starts all over again. Step two in the tutorial. 4 goto HKEY etc. But I don't get this option, so I cannot follow this instruction. Any more suggestions? Greetings, Ted fotoflex;513832 Wrote: Way too quick! Greetings, Ted Hi Ted, I'm not sure what you mean that you "don't get this option", but I updated the tutorial to include a download for it to make it easier to do. You might try it now. Let me know if you still have trouble with it. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/85...h-service.html Shawn -- brink *There are no dumb questions, just the people that do not ask them.* WWW.VISTAX64.COM (\"HTTP://WWW.VISTAX64.COM\") *Please post feedback to help others.* |

Thank you, Shawn,
But this is way beyound me, I'm afraid. I thought the download would do the trick, but then I saw the rest of it. I just hope I didn't do too much damage by downloading it. It's like learning to ride a bicycle and the next step being a jumbojet. And in english. The terms are quite different. I'm used to Dutch! Only wanted a computer to make things easier. 'Index - Windows Search Service' (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/85...h-service.html) Shawn Ok Ted, It will not do any damage to you. It just causes a reset and will revert back to the default value after you either logoff and logon or restart the computer. If the Index is still not working right for you, then you could just simply disable it and use the non-indexed search instead. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/69...e-disable.html You can adjust your search settings to how you want to do searches also. Hi Shawn,
I'm apperantly not allowed to change the index setting. When I change to disable and press start, I get a window that it's stopped. Fout 1067. If I open a explorer window, I don't get search options nor tools. When I just type in a search item, it takes ages to find something, but if I click the enable index window, it goes really quick. Then when you g back a page, it starts all over again. That's why I want either to enable or disable, but neither option works Thanks, Ted "brink" wrote: fotoflex;516239 Wrote: Thank you, Shawn, But this is way beyound me, I'm afraid.
